So my coworker thinks our boss is watching porn on the TV in his office upstairs. We all work downstairs and go up there very rarely to talk to him. But my coworker says she's pretty sure she's caught him once or twice (I guess he turned the TV off real quick) on different occasions.

And in case your mental image of him immediately goes to "stereotypical sleazy pervert", he's a pretty handsome, highly educated guy who's married and has two kids.

Thoughts? (I'm not planning on making this into an issue at work or anything, I'd just love to hear what other peoples' reactions to this are.)

There's a time and place for watching porn and it's not at work. Unless your job is to edit or film pornographic films.

So yeah, he shouldn't be watching porn.

Well if the only evidence is turning the TV off really quick it might not mean anything. I tend to get embarrassed about my interests so I'd probably do the same thing even if I was just watching cartoons or whatever. Maybe he didn't want his employees to know he liked MLP:FIM or something. XD But if he really is watching porn... yeah, not appropriate for work. Though I don't get why he's watching TV on the job in the first place... unless he was on break when your coworker caught him or something.

Bees buzz. Fish swim. Guys watch porn. (And girls too.)

He shouldn't be doing it on company time though even if he is the boss. (That's what laptops and home bathrooms are for.) It's just unprofessional.

It's unprofessional of him if he's actually doing it, but it's possible your coworker is assuming stuff without too much evidence, too.

I don't think porn-viewing has much to do with looks, intelligence, family status, or access to actual sex.

He might be watching at work specifically because he has a wife and couldn't get away with this at home.

It's very inappropriate, of course.

Does he own the company? If so, w/e. His time, his money.

I don't care how "handsome" or "highly educated" he is or what his home life is. That has nothing to do with this. It's unprofessional. Period. As an anon above said, there is a time and a place.

To me he is the "stereotypical sleazy pervert" because he apparently can't control himself for the hours he is at work and should be working. I mean, you don't get to slack off and watch porn on the clock do you?

If I had hard evidence I would report it. (But I don't think turning off a TV quickly qualifies as that.)

I, uh, don't know your coworker but if "turns off the tv quickly" is proof of porn watching I wouldn't really take that seriously? Sounds kinda like someone has an overactive imagination and likes to stir stuff up.

If he is watching pornography that's pretty unprofessional but it looks like it isn't actually affecting anyone to the point that no one is even sure he's doing it. So... I agree about not making this an issue unless the behavior escalates or proof is obtained.

Does his door not have a lock? Because if he was watching pornography at work where someone can easily walk in on him I think your bigger problem is that your boss is a freaking moron.

Turning the tv off quickly isn't indicative of anything tbh.

This is probably off-topic, but I just read the entirety of memosfromfury.tumblr.com and have decided the most terrifying thing that could happen at work would be if Samuel L Jackson caught me when I was checking reddit on my phone, glared at me, and told me to get back to work. Motherfucker.

The obvious solution is to buy a life-sized Samuel L Jackson cardboard cutout, put it outside your boss's door, and play a recording of various movie quotes to get his attention.

Only very tangentially relevant, but: I spent a summer between semesters about a decade ago working at an independent video rental place that had an X-rated section (oddly enough, it wasn't the big moneymaker for the store; that was their import section). We opened at 10:00 am, and most weekdays the only people there until noon were a random selection of two out of the following three people:

1) Me - the new girl, fat and somewhat homely, in my 20s

2) Manager #1 - a cranky bearded skinny guy in his 30s who knew a ton about Westerns and happened to be gay

3) Manager #2 - a very flamboyant and fairly attractive gay guy in his 40s

Every weekday morning at about 10:45, a group of dudes in nice suits and expensive watches would show up, pretend to browse the rest of the store for five minutes, then make individual beelines for the X-rated section. They would each select one video and then come back to the counter to check out. And every single day I was there, the whole group - usually five or six of them - would line up in front of me to ring them up. The manager (whichever one was on duty) would make it a point to make it clear his register was also open, and they never, ever took him up on it. Manager #1 would even announce it in his most irritated voice.

Then whichever manager was there would go to the night dropbox and empty it again, since these guys returned each previous day's movie when they arrived but never actually brought their returns back into the store.

Once I finally asked what they did when it was the two of them on early shift. Manager #2 said they'd usually hang around to see if there were any other cashiers, then split 50/50 into two lines. However, on the very rare occasions when the owner's sister took a day shift, they'd all line up in front of her (thin, frazzled-looking Asian woman in her 40s) instead of Manager #1 or #2.

I have no idea what was up with that.

Huh. I once overheard some people who had worked in video stores (not all the same one) commiserating about their old jobs and once woman mentioned that male customers would never go to her register when they were renting porn and, in fact, her manager would keep her away from the register nearest the porn section. One guy then suggested that was because the men renting porn were too embarrassed to bring their selections to a woman and the manager knew it was better for business to have a male employee on hand to handle the porn customers.

Sounds like you had the exact opposite experience. I don't know what was up with that, either.
