Honestly, the shippy fic is usually the least satisfying type of fic for me. I like a lot of them, but they quite frequently miss so many of the levels I fangasmed over and feel so disconnected from the stuff I loved about the film that it doesn't satisfy my "NEED MOAR" reaction to the film. What I really love is team-fic, or character-fic, or friendship/dynamic-fic rooted in the film's subtext, or fics elaborating on the events and plot of the movie.

And there's some fandoms I don't really ship anything in, too.

And yeah, I get what you mean -- most stuff I ship is due to the fact that I like what the pairing does to the two characters' personalities, which is why it baffles me when retcons and AUs and reboots drastically change the characters, yet fans keep shipping them anyway. Like, wouldn't that completely negate your reasons for shipping it in the first place? Unless of course you ship it for entirely different reasons...
