Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr. Worst book I have ever read. It systematically takes every single choice away from the heroine (hell, from most of the women in the book) and then my edition has an interview with the author in the back blathering on about how she just LOVES choice. Ugh.

And also, total lack of consent in just about every aspect and the vile, vile plot of the 'hero' saying he'd never have stalked and pursued the heroine's mom until the day she died if he'd known that the mom would have given birth to the heroine. Just fuck you, book.

This sounds like a spin off of Twilight about the daughter's "romance".

:| Sadly, I think the Epically Awful Tale of Jacob and Renesmee would have been better and had more consent and choices in it than this book. Which... says a lot. :(

i thought the ideas were pretty interesting but oh my god i absolutely HATED aislinn. she was boring, spineless and had absolutely zero personality to speak of. the "plot" revolved all around her yet she did nothing proactive, interesting or even anything to consider herself a protagonist. the utterly bland writing, the equally one-dimensional side characters and love interest (seth i disliked you SO MUCH OH HOLY GOODNESS) and the off pacing didn't help the book.

tl;dr i'm tired and have too many opinions over a YA book.

XD I have ALL THE FEELINGS about this awful book, so I totally understand. Though I spent too much time feeling sorry for Aislin to hate her. Her humanity started fading without her permission before she even knew what was going on! And then her options are try and be the Summer Queen and if she fails, like every other girl before her, she has to either become a mere shadow of herself that does nothing but giggle and requires sex to survive or become the Winter Girl with the never ending pain and cold and shunning from everyone else with the dreadful task of hoping some other girl catches the king's eye and tries and fails and chooses to take your place. :( I mean, Aislin didn't really have many options, since the fae would have followed her wherever she went and her humanity started fading before she had any idea she was in danger.

That I could totally understand. Having your humanity erased without your permission and on top of that, having very few options about just about everything about your existence was horrifying. However, I found it difficult to feel bad for her because I was just plainly so bored with her. I do, however, like the universe Marr created and wish I had the patience/focus to write sweeping epic character driven story taking place in this universe.

I was literally coming here to say the same thing, and you voiced my issues with it so well!

I couldn't even finish the book, which I thankfully can't say for many.
