I wonder if they'll follow the same logic as the TOS reboot.

"TNG, eh? It's vitally important that while rebooting and changing all kinds of things, we stay true to the spirit of 1980s gender politics."

"Damn. Are you sure there isn't anyway we could just eliminate women from this universe entirely instead?"

I agree!! I like nu Trek but the serious lack of women make it look like the 60s. Even in the second film it seems all the important guest stars are men. Are all the women on different starships? Why can't we have a female villain? Where are the canon female characters of Chapel and Rand?

I quite agree about the dearth of non-mommy female characters (even token admirals and whatnot). That being said, Chapel apparently exists offscreen in the Reboot, because McCoy talks to her.

In spite of the denials, I think there's a good chance that Alice Eve will be playing Rand in the next movie. If they've expanded her role the way they did Uhura's, that would be a bit of all right.

I agree with everything here.

The good news is that the new movie will have at least 3 new ladies. But part of me wishes they had genderbent one of the Main 7. Chekov, perhaps. They already, as a friend of mine said, made a hard left turn with his character and it wouldn't be too much of a stretch.

I am really hoping that we'll get Chapel and Rand in the new movie, there's literally no excuse for there to be so few women. Even a few name drops in the first movie would've been nice.

Or hell, I'd love it if we could see more of Gaila too. I never dabbled much in the nutrek universe, so I'm not sure if her backstory has been established (I'm not getting much from her Memory Alpha page) but I'm sure there's an interesting story to be told with an Orion woman ending up in Starfleet.
