Oh wait, wait, there was one book I just couldn't do anything but loathe: The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. The main character is an unrepentant shit who (SPOILER)lets his wife die because he wants pretty prostitutes. (END SPOILER)

I get that he's supposed to be a douche, but I kept waiting for him to see what he was doing to O-lan and at least be mixed-emotion kind sometimes and NOPE. Just pages and pages of ew. Seeing people's praise of her depiction of Chinese culture just made me think "If I were Chinese I'd want to break this person's fingers for portraying my people this way, goddamn."

I've read a lot of other books about cultures that are problematic/sad/hurtful to their members, and liked them (see my comments on Brokeback Mountain yesterday.) But The Good Earth just made me fucking loathe everyone everywhere for weeks. >:
