Two of my favorite ships are Joker/Harley and Lucifer/Belial (Angel Sanctuary) because they are so canonically fucked up. I honestly can't tell you why other than I do, but if I knew someone in a relationship like those in RL I'd be all over them to get the hell out.

Some people are just into fucked up relationships OP. Some people find it interesting/hot/both to explore an utterly disturbing idea. It doesn't just apply to romance but also many other topics.

I think a lot of people in such pairings KNOW they're awful (and do this a lot in kink memes- going down those 'dark' paths) and either like to explore it honestly, or have guilty pleasures perhaps even if they know it would be awful IRL.

Of course there are also those who are rather deluded and think of such things as twoo wuv and thus get OOC fanfics typed out but yeah. There can be various reasons people ship something- even when they technically know it's fucked up.

Guilty pleasure, that's why. Unless they're saying it's really healthy and happy, in which case they probably don't know what a healthy relationship looks like.

I don't know if you want an answer, if you're feeling high and mighty, or if you're triggered or upset and simply saying so. But on the off chance it's 1), here's my answer. I speak for no other M/SS shipper anywhere ever and others probably disagree with large chunks of this.

Yeah, I think they're a LOT darker in Prime than in most other continuities. And even in other continuities, people have legitimately good reasons to find the ship creepy.

I might not ship them in Prime if I didn't already ship them in everything else. It's entirely possible I see them through OTP glasses -- and, yes, in my own fic (I can speak for precisely no one else) I tend to play down the scared and woobie SS and play up the snark and power games.

But I suspect I'd still ship them anyway, and here's why:

I like dark. And the kind of dark I like, personally, isn't angst and sadness (probably part of why I don't like h/c), it's glamorized violence. It's the whole back and forth, dancing on razors, one misstep will kill you power play thing. I like seeing characters get hurt sometimes, too, because that means the danger is real, and the real danger, the something is seriously fucked up here, becomes something the characters play with, something they're drawn to. Something real people shouldn't be drawn to, but something that's hot in fantasy. To me, anyway.

And no, canon doesn't always portray these two that way, but sometimes it does. I like those moments. I want to write about them. I don't like the other moments. I don't write about them. I'm picking out what I like and expanding on it.

And I like these versions of the characters (most of the time.) I like a Megatron who's regal and badass but terrifying in the lengths he's willing to go to to get what he wants. I like a Starscream who's got something a bit more sinister to him, in addition to the cocky fabulousness of G1 SS and some others. I like the thought of a competent, not-woobie Starscream with that dark sort of devious streak matching his wits against someone as mighty as Megatron. I like this getting them off. I like the sharp teeth and pointy things. I like the exaggeration. I like the ridiculousness. It's like double chocolate chocolate cake. I like all the possibilities for sticky, from Starscream being a size queen to masochism to just plain thinking about how nifty big things in small places are to me in general. I don't know why... but I'm pretty sure size kink is common.

I like their designs. I think they're pretty. In a sexily sinister way that no other aesthetic has. I love the ridiculous size difference, because I have a size kink. I like masculine tops with feminine bottoms -- and this version of M/SS is all about that, and I think it's so damn pretty.

While I don't like woobie SS at all and really, really, REALLY wish canon would stick to sinister and creepy and get rid of the damn cuteness thing, I do like that this incarnation of M/SS is, well, actually fucked up. I like that it's not just like G1, where things always go back to normal. (I like that version too, for different reasons.) I like that actions have consequences. I like that both of them are bitter and angry because shit really has gone down, and that at the same time they really don't know where exactly they stand with one another.

I like that, when SS isn't being portrayed as a woobie travesty I can't stand, they're two powerful characters -- two powerful villains. I love the possibilities and the complexity there. I love thinking about what it means to be someone like Starscream, fueled by pure ambition and yet -- second (at least until he left.) I love thinking about the unhealthy obsession that would cause and, yeah, that part of that obsession would be lust.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-05 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This - sort of. I'm not so big on the size kink, but I love the idea of the two of them getting off to some weird, kinda twisted game their playing with each other.

Eep, somehow half my text ended up in the wrong paragraphs. Sorry if my c&ping made that impossible to understand O_O

But yeah, anon, I think we're similar. I like it when it's a power game, and the stakes are everything, and that gets both of them going like nothing else.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Naw, it's all good - I'll admit I'm a bit distracted, so I probably misread that bit!

But yeah - I'm a sucker for power games, and these two in Prime? One of the best, imo, for that.

Definitely. Abuse isn't hot to me (is it to anyone?!) but power games, where one character is only a teeeeeeny bit less strong than the other, and keeps striving nonetheless?

That's pure sex to me.

And that's a huge part what M/SS have always been, IMO, in almost any continuity. Different facets of that idea. The evil emperor with the ambitious, cunning lieutenant.

I think that may be part of the disconnect, actually. I think a lot of people who see abuse first and foremost tend to be people who feel sorry for SS. You get takes on him where he's bitter, beaten down, snarky because Megatron's awful... rather than he himself being ruthlessly ambitious. It's different takes on the character.

(And leads to a lot of h/c saving SS from Megatron, which is perfectly valid but not my bag, precisely because that's not the version of SS I prefer. Or of Megatron, either, really.)

Out of pure curiosity (and because I have only watched a little of TF: Prime) what are your thoughts on M/SS in the G1 continuity?

Would you mind if I link you to something? If you'd rather I c&p from it or talk directly to you I'd be glad to, but I posted on that a while back to my Lj & DW:

Because it's fascinating, and because it allows people to explore the dark side that we all share but that the vast majority of us know it would be terrible to release.

Catharsis is hot, man.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Some people seem to like that sort of thing...

Ever really paid attention to the canon Spike/Buffy pairing? It's very abusive, but still one of the most popular het parings in that fandom.

They're built in caves with boxes of scraps.

So they gestate nestled inside of Tony Stark's chest? ...I guess that's why they're so cute for the first couple years of their lives.

And does he use the suit to fly around dropping babies into mommies tummies through their belly buttons?

They all take after their father.

Tony is sort of like the stork. He flies around delivering robobabies to happy robot couples. You might wake up one morning and have a moped in the driveway next to your parents' cars.

Maybe because it makes for great rape scenarios and TF fandom (like most fandoms) love rape kink.

I don't, but I'm also not into alien robots with human genitalia, so I'm probably just a minority and not qualified to speak for the ones who do.
