In the second movie yeah but in the third one they pretty much had him being completely evil. Even threw in a scene where he frames Sam for eating the lembas crackers.

Andy Serkis even wrote about in his book how Gollum's character changed between the movies. I.E. whereas in TTT Smeagol was fundamentally good but suffering from his "addiction", in RotK Smeagol was just as bad as Gollum, except he would "play the victim" to get his way.

To be fair, that was also after the misunderstood betrayal with Faramir, so Smeagol really didn't have a reason to try and redeem himself anymore.
