It's my SO's birthday so we are going to do fun stuff. I'm going to try to make pho (hopefully it won't be a disaster) and I'm going to make him a cake. We will probably see a movie or two. AND, it's a three day weekend for me. Yay!

I usually work weekends but this one I have off. I promised myself to finally send my father's death certificate out to his creditors, which I am dreading and keep putting off.

Not to put a damper on the conversation, I'll probably also study my online German course which is fun for me. And read, and write fanfic. (I've almost got another bingo in Cotton Candy Bingo, and I have a drabble/ficlet meme I need to catch up on.)

Okay, question. On some other community that I stumbled on, some people were making what were (to me) odd and surprising statements about the necessity of graphical calculators for learning and carrying out calculus and other advanced maths. Some of these statements are excerpted below:

[After someone suggests younger students do not need a graphical calculator] I"s he okay with scientific calculators, or should they all be looking up the evaluations of sin(21.7), etc, in tables somewhere?

Also, tbh, my math classes in HS were taught with a graphing calculator's capabilities in mind -- we certainly weren't taught, e.g. how to graph in radians by hand."


"You're not doing numeric inverse trig integrals, or finding the solution to e^x = cos(2x) in chemistry, though. You NEED a graphing calculator for those things."

My question is, are these statements an accurate reflection of how maths is taught in American schools and understood by people who have gone through it, or is this person full of it?

Work on Saturday and on Sunday, heading over to the Islamic Temple for their open house-bazaar-smorgasbord. I wanna get my hand henna'd and freak out all the co-workers/customers at the store where I work. Plus, baklava.

I want to squeeze in some time for writing tonight, as I have to get bed early for work tomorrow.

The rest of the weekend will be dedicated to writing and organizing everything for my screenplay. I have a bad habit of writing scenes and details and dialogue down on any piece of paper I can find.

- study a bit
- walk around public places to see how many street pass folk I can collect with my 3DS.
- movie/tv time with big sister who is standing in for little sister who is away far far away. the commentary will be markedly less fun, but wevs.
- eat some turkey dinner with the family for Thanksgiving, but probably won't eat the turkey. I'm in it for the mashed potatoes and roasted veggies :d

Tomorrow is opening night of my production of Julius Caesar! I did some dramaturgical and AD work on it, and I'll be selling concessions. Tonight I get to watch Fringe when it airs, which I won't be able to do during most of the run.

Technically it's a long weekend, but I don't work Mondays anyway so it's literally no difference to my weekend whatsoever, save for Thanksgiving dinner.

Right now I'm working on my second short story for my Creative Writing class (it's due Saturday night), but tomorrow I'm going yardsaling, then to the barn, and then back home to work on my story some more. Sunday will probably be spent studying for my other class. Yep, it's shaping up to be a pretty productive (if exhausting) weekend.
