I never got the Shinji hate. He's fourteen! And more specifically, he's a fourteen year old who is having to shoulder an enormous burden that would be too much for many (maybe even most) adults. Evangelion realistically depicts what happens when children have to do an adult's job. It makes them fucked up.

But I guess people just don't want realism in their power fantasies of giant robots, and can't get their head around the concept that Eva is not a power fantasy series.

I like Shinji and it's not even about age. It's about the fact that it's okay to be sad and depressed and fucked up and there's nothing shameful about it, and anyone who thinks there is can gtfo.

I don't necessarily want realism, but I do want realistic people in them! I can't stand stories with impossibly perfect badass characters. Give me Trigun or Evangelion (original flavor) any day.

But couldn't they be fucked up and still have some redeeming qualities as characters? I mean, realism is great and all, but I feel like something has gone wrong when by the end I'm relieved everyone is dead.

I don't think that was the intent of the show creator.

Though for what little I care about it, I think his intent was to thrown in his anime all the clichés that would draw in the insecure fanboys, and pretend there was some deep meaning behind it, by leaving sparse clues and letting fans make up theories about it.

Well done, commercially. But I stopped giving a damn before the end.
