Been going through the recruitment process for a job in the field I want to work in, that's got great job protection and pays twice my current salary.

Process started about four months ago, and all I had left was the security check and fitness assessment. Things which I've passed for the same organisation before, and won't fail.

Well this morning I got a letter telling me budget cuts meant the position is gone, thanks for all your time etc et fucking cetera.

Yay for being almost the new lost decade. Nothing like knowing you're basically irreparably screwed over for graduating right when the recession hit.

(I guess this thread can be re-purposed for bitching about work/not being able to find suitable work)

I'm cringing right now. I know things will be so much worse if Romney gets in and I don't think I can take much more of this. :/

Happened to me earlier this week. I feel your pain.

I've been working in a position that's...so far away from my college training, it isn't even funny, making less money than I've ever made, and saw a light at the end of the tunnel in a position with Veteran's Administration. Doing work that's still nowhere near what my capabilities are, but at least I had a foot in the door - I was now considered qualified to file papers, and make 50% more an hour than what I'm currently making - and it'd be a full-time job with benefits and retirement and all that fun stuff.

I got an email Monday that the position has been scrapped due to 'needing funds elsewhere'.

This job market is severely disappointing, and worse in an area that's noted for being a farming and mining community, with office positions coming few and far between.

My field right now is only taking on applicants who volunteer (i.e. literally do the same job for free), for between six months to a year to get signed off on set criteria - after training for six weeks. And then make it on the very limited internal recruitment drives that get run.

Oh and they're looking at starting a certification process early next year, which costs two thousand pounds, takes up like five weeks, and has no use outside the field.

But it's not even that, if I could find anything befitting a graduate I'd be happy. I've spent the last week and a bit as acting manager for the local area of my company, and despite all the stress and pressure I was happy. The menial job I'm doing right now is beginning to take a real psychological toll.

I've gone through so many grad schemes, and got to the final few candidates, but none of that is worth shit without quite making it, and I'm looking right now at closer to three years out of Uni that's all wasted on a long term career perspective.

One hope I'm holding out on right now is HR really fucked up with an internal application of mine, and I have concrete evidence of their screw up, so it's being investigated (which has been going on for two months today, but I'm chasing up). So there's a slim but actual chance I'll get something of worth from that.

Aw fucking suck, man. Jesus Christ, that is the worst. Fuck the economy.

I feel you. I've applied to 9 different fellowships/jobs within the past couple of weeks, but god only knows if that's going to work out.

I only have some modicum of hope because a.) I'm willing to do the kind of shit most other people won't, and b.) I have skills necessary to national security. Semi-win?

I was rejected for a job because they wanted people who are, quote, "of sound health, both mental and physical". All I'd said was that I had some anxiety issues that had, in my three years of working a nearly identical position elsewhere, never interfered. I had the letter of recommendation to prove it too.

Fun little taste of how people are going to treat me the rest of my life: human until I can no longer fully conceal my "issues", subhuman afterward.

At least you know now that you shouldn't mention things like that until after the job is secured and you've been there for a while. It's what everybody else on the damn planet does, so I don't know why you're surprised that's what they want.

But hopefully you've learned your lesson: lie your fucking ass off.

That sucks, anon. Next time just lie. If you know you can do the job and your anxiety is not likely to interfere, then I see no reason why you should need to come clean about it. In fact, it sounds like your would-be employers are discriminating against people with disabilities that don't actually prevent them from being good workers or even require special accommodation. Besides, anyone could become not "of sound health" at any time, so there are no guarantees.

Depending on where you live, you might have grounds for a discrimination complaint. Not that that helps at all without access to a lawyer, but...

That sucks. And yeah, the whole situation, for really our entire fucking generation, is so infuriating and alienating. It's just fucking terrible. We can analyze, in-depth, the ways in which it is fucking terrible. But the fact is that we all know it's fucking terrible and that we got screwed.

Just.... aaaaaaaaaaaargh.

I'm afraid to say anything online about my job ever anywhere, so I will just say this:
