I did identify with Shinji at the time (and still do in some stuff). Also with other Eva characters just as fucked up as him. I wouldn't exactly say awesome but to me at 17, to see someone like these kids with my issues in a show was catharsis (and I even liked episode 26's cheap therapy, sue me.) And I always thought the cool part about NGE wasn't the mecha or the mythology or even the mindfuck. It was the twist of how most people -especially in the shounen demographics- would totally break down and suck as action heroes.
