Re: What is romantic love?

Intimacy. Not sex, exactly, but emotional, physical, and just general intimacy. A romantic relationship is one that involves letting down barriers and involves some kind of vulnerability; it's one where an attempt is made to live closely together and to be together, not a friendship between two fundamentally separate people. To me, a platonic relationship is more one of mind and personality, a relationship where people get along incredibly well and vibe and feel deep admiration for each other, but remain apart. As Montaigne says, friendship has "a generall and universall heat, and equally tempered, a constant and setled heat, all pleasure and smoothnes, that hath no pricking or stinging in it". It's a more equitable and a more reserved relationship - not to denigrate platonic friendship, which can be incredibly deeply felt.

I think the key thing is that romantic love is erotic - not in the sense that it is sexual, but in the sense that it involves eros, passion, something deeply personal related to our fundamental limitations and frailties as human beings. But that still doesn't quite get at it - it's just a really complex, involved, hard to define concept. But that would be my initial approach - in a word, romantic love is more passionate and involved, platonic love is more reserved and separate.
