I worry more about the people who seem to think that Shinji is the most "realistic" of the pilots. There's nothing "unrealistic" about reacting to stress differently than someone else. Asuka and Rei were just as realistic as Shinji in their own ways.

Psychologists have observed a whole range of different stress responses in people (the most common being flight, fight, and freeze). Picking any one of those is not more "realistic" than any other, they're all something real humans really do when confronted with a threat.

It's also worrying that flight/freeze is being denigrated as the coward's way out here, at the same time as being normed o_O The "fight" reaction is often the most dangerous and worst response to a threat, not something "badasses" do. The whole point is to survive, and if you survived by freezing/running, you won! At the start Shinji is not a trained soldier with conditioning against these responses. His isn't any braver or more realistic than anyone else's would be, even if their first reaction was to try to kick ass.
