He really said that? UGH. In my Tolkien seminar, everyone was saying Sam was the true "hero" of LOTR. I'm like, excuse you? Aragorn.

i think it's hard to choose a hero to the series because it's an ensemble piece and everyone plays an important part. that's what i love so much about it.

that said, aragorn is such a badass. i love that whole "unwilling hero" trope, that's why i love harry potter (the character) so much.

Definitely! Yeah it was an interested discussion trying to pinpoint a hero, especially since the one who SHOULD be the hero, Frodo, technically failed at his task.

I really don't think Tolkien, in saying the thing about Sam being the 'true hero" was trying to say that he was really superior to every other character in some way. Doesn't he say that re: Sam being the everyman to come back and live in the Shire again and have a normal life? I just hate how people always seem to use it to try to claim that Sam's better than everyone, and even that if they'd given the ring to him he would have dropped it in Mount Doom no problem because he's just so humble and immune. (Even if Tolkien I think also said he was a bit conceited.)

I don't know if Tolkien ever said he was the hero, either, but people in my seminar did

Yeah, Tolkien did use something like that phrase too. He talked about Sam coming home and getting married and said,

"But the highest love-story, that of Aragorn and Arwen Elrond's daughter is only alluded to as a known thing. It is told elsewhere in a short tale, Of Aragorn and Arwen Undómiel. I think the simple 'rustic' love of Sam and his Rosie (nowhere elaborated) is absolutely essential to the study of his (the chief hero's) character, and to the theme of the relation of ordinary life (breathing, eating, working, begetting) and quests, sacrifice, causes, and the 'longing for Elves', and sheer beauty."

So he did use the phrase "chief hero" but I can't believe he meant it in the way it's used in fandom, to search for the "true hero" of the book not even in terms of who's the protagonist, but pitting them against each other and claiming Sam's heroism is more pure or more important.
