I hated Sam in the movies because of the way they pushed his Gollum hating to the extreme.

I don't think Sam's feelings about Gollum were extreme in the movies at all. Gollum's a nasty little rat who eats rabbits raw and Sam doesn't trust him as far as he can throw him.

However, Sam was extremely rude in the movies. I'm not saying he should trust Gollum (he shouldn't) or like Gollum (he's not required to and I'd be very surprised if he did) or even pity Gollum, but it's just common sense to treat someone essential to your journey with as much courtesy as possible.
