Re: How Do I Background Check Myself?

It's right there on the front page, as well as in the search results. It's glaringly obvious to anyone that the site is only for the US. But so many US people don't notice, unlike people from other countries who sort of have to learn to notice, you know?

My (mild) frustration is reasonable, and derived from years of observation. I share it with many, but I usually keep quiet because whatever. I just had to say something then.

Oh, I didn't check this particular site out. I didn't know it said anything like that on the first page.

I understand where you're coming from a little better now. On initial read I thought you meant most people from the U.S. assume everyone with an internet connection are in the U.S. and link accordingly. Not that some of us tend to be ignorant about site access for other countries.

I completely understand your frustration is reasonable, wasn't trying to say it wasn't. :( Just felt a little embarrassed as someone who has been guilty of oblivious linkage and I wanted to let you know most of us don't mean to imply the internet is only in the U.S. and apologize?

And I really am sorry. Still kind of embarrassed about my link snafu I made in a previous F!S post.

I don't know if you, or anyone else reading this thread, know of a way to check what countries a website can be accessed from?

No worries :)

I don't know of any online tools, but there might be some. It would be hard to check without proxies in different IP locations, because the site server's private IP filtering rules isn't something that can be explicitly read by third parties.

Conditional content is pretty annoying, although I understand it in the case of regional licensing rules. What gets my goat the most is when a site insists on serving up license-free regional content with no way to access the content of other regions, so that when someone links to a region-specific article on a website, other regions can't access it.

Thanks anyway.

I spent some time trying to find something myself but everything seems mostly focused on helping people circumvent country/region restrictions so I guess trial-and-error and maybe checking the site's "about" or FAQ until I find something.
