Wish-fulfillment character flaws?

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-10-06 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone else have specific personality flaws that you know are flaws and are bad things and which you should never want to have, but which kind of hits your wish-fulfillment button when you see those flaws in fictional characters?

Like, I have a HUGE thing for arrogant show-offs. The more conceited and flamboyant and loud, the better, (as long as there's actually some basis for their high opinion of themselves, otherwise they look like dweebs). Doubly so if they're obnoxiously hammy and/or sarcastic. I once wrote out a whole list of examples of this character type in a discussion about "characters I shouldn't want to be like but do anyway" but I can't remember where it is.

Even though it's obviously bad to be like that and the problems and ill effects associated with that kind of behavior far outweigh the benefits, I always wish I had the stones and self-confidence and lack of hang-ups to be that self-aggrandizing and unafraid of people staring at me as they are.

I love asshole characters like House or Barney from HIMYM. I would never in a million years want someone like that in reality or think they were funny or anything, but in a fictional world I like 'em.

I don't really want to be an asshole or a jerk but there is something, I don't know, freeing? about the idea to just say whatever you want without caring about people's feelings and whatnot.

I wish I could be a sweet little doormat that everyone loves because she's so caring and takes care of them all, to the point where she neglects herself.

I'm...honestly kind of a bitch sometimes, so...yeah.

Con artists who only live for themselves (and maybe a couple of other people, just enough to make them sympathetic), constantly trick everyone, get away with everything, and just when they look like they're about to turn around and do something nice for someone else - it turns out to be another scam.

I guess I just admire street smarts and the kind of people skills it would take to get away with behavior like that. But naturally, in real life I wouldn't be able to stand it.

I tend to prefer bastards that get away with stuff because they are smarter or have skills that are invaluable... Which I know would get annoying petty fast in RL.

On the same note characters that just don't care about people's feelings and so on, but still get stuff done.

Probably because in real life I'm an unfeeling bastard who don't care and its nice to see characters acting the way I am, even if it is more extreme in fiction than RL.

I'm really fond of socially awkward/anxious characters, because I'm so socially awkward/anxious myself, it's comforting to see them succeed despite their flaws.
