brightblueink: Sayaka from Madoka Magica tilting her head. (Sayaka head tilt)

I'm a liiiittle confused by this. Why not just read BL that's original fiction? There's a ton of that AFAIK. It seems like it'd be less work.

Not OP, but, for me, I don't want to have to slog through a long BL manga (because I find BL boring 99% of the time), and I don't really care about the characters in some short yaoi oneshot because I just met them.

With doujinshi, I get porn for characters I care about in a variety of art styles in a variety of situations.
brightblueink: Madoka looking surprised and holding a cat (Graham has a new insight to share)

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-10-06 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But what happens if you watch a show just to understand it's yaoi doujin and it turns out you hate the characters? Wouldn't that be a big waste of time? Or do you just force yourself to care about them anyway? And if you do, then couldn't you force yourself to care about the characters in the original works?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if I don't like any of the characters, I just stop watching the anime or reading the manga and don't look for doujinshi. It really only takes me an episode or a few chapters to tell whether I'll like the characters or not. It's that simple.
brightblueink: Renge from Ouran with heart-shaped pupils in her opera glasses (Behold the majestic fangirl)

Okay, gotcha. It's not a viewpoint I can totally identify with, but it makes sense now that you've explained it a little more.

BL fiction tends to be so limited though... very very rarely is there much more to the story than the relationship of the characters, and honestly they tend to be kind of boring. Until we reach a point where it's totally normal to have canon gay characters in mainstream stories, it's usually easier to find interesting characters in mainstream series and then slash them.

Also I tend not to care about relationships if the characters start off in a relationship or are immediately thrown into one. I want them to build up to it and have personalities and other relationships, and then we can start talking about romance.
brightblueink: Kyuubey's face. It's terrifyingly cute. (Contract?)

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-10-07 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if that's what the secret is about, though...the way it's phrased, it sounds like all they care about is the porn? I mean, if you're only watching something to understand porn based on it...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Regular anime/manga have more attractive character designs (=doujin/fanart have better art). Generalization, but it's just easier.
brightblueink: Varric steepling his fingers and looking rather smug. (EXACTLY as planned!)

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-10-07 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
lol, okay, point. Less yaoi hands.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's not the same. Most BL manga revolves around the romance, and that's like the only conflict in them has to do with romance. And the characters are rarely ever as well developed as ones from shonen/seinen/etc type stories. Plus, porn for those types of series are rare, and there's like much more doujinshi and fanworks and people to with about series like, Reborn, or currently Kuroko no Basket than say, Sekaiichi Hatsukoi.

Also sometimes you want to read about the Italian Mafia, Ninjas, or rebel Ecoterrorists trying to save the Planet rather than two high school kids/businessmen/etc that are gay but can't have a relationship because society says no.
