Actually it was that there were so many "Kamina saved my life" secrets that it became a meme. The layout was originally red instead of blue and the guy was just some random muscle dude, but by popular demand (pursuant to the meme) he was changed to Kamina.

Do you remember when this happened? Month/year? I've been around a while and I can't remember the layout switch ^^;

It was in August of 2008. The poll to determine the layout is here, and the post announcing the results and discussing the possibility of changing the winning theme to Kamina is here. You can see the original theme at that first link.

Is layout #1 the original layout? I think I read f!s through an ljfriend's friends feed so I don't remember the old layout at all. I didn't even vote in the poll...
