Maybe I'm just a suspicious bastard, and maybe the once-every-two-weeks student victimization bullshit has put me on edge, but I don't walk anywhere without a knife in this city.

Also don't walk alone at night ever, it's a bad idea. :( What would I do without my FS BFF if you got jumped.

Mostly because having a weapon on your person = planning to do something with that weapon, at least down here. Especially when police are involved. Honestly I think I could be shot in the street and the police would say that I was obviously starting a fight because I was carrying a knife. >:/

Seriously, in Alabama? Jesus, I thought they would have golf clapped you for that. Or at least carry a utility knife with a good sturdy blade in it, if nothing else. Like a Leatherman or a Swiss Army knife. Useful and deadly!

I mean, my city has a pretty sizable crime rate, and so far I haven't been frisked for weapons, so you'll probably be okay.

I HOPE NOT. I might have to come down there and stab a bitch elsewise. Wow that sounded like an abusive stalker. Uhm. Well, you know what I mean.

It's funny, because in the country areas, yeah knives, guns, etc are very common, but downtown (our ghetto-ish area) and in suburban areas it's verrry easy to get in trouble with the law for the smallest things.

I KNOW WHAT YOU MEANT. I would also stab you if you left me! :D

That really sucks. I mean, you should still get some kind of self defense something, as long as it's not a Rambo knife you carry around bare stuck through your belt. Even steel toed shoes would be fine.

I've actually been trained by LEOs, and can almost guarantee I'm taller and sturdier then you.

I would get repeatedly fucked up, because if you pull a knife you're getting cut up - especially if the other person knows what they're doing. And it automatically escalates everything the minute it enters play.

In fact I urge you to see if you can get yourself on a self defence course, and see exactly how this would actually play out.

Whoa, take it easy. It's not like I'm pulling knives out on anybody who looks at me cockeyed. Or hoping that I can win in a knife fight.

I'm going to say here that our experiences are fundamentally different, but it's not like what I do should be immediately discounted. I've never been assaulted by someone looking to rape or mug me. Maybe I am somewhat misguided in my ability to defend myself because of my dearth in that area, I don't know.

But the experiences I have had have dictated that I always have something on me to a.) defend myself, or b.) deter whatever is attacking me. The knife is there for backup, not so that I can whip it out every time I feel threatened.

um if a dude is coming at you and you brandish a sudden knife he will probably fuck off without touching you. if you know how to wield it properly not a whole lot of attackers are going to try and wrestle it from you. if someone is coming at you you're going to get hurt regardless unless you defend yourself, and intimidation with a weapon is a huge factor. no self defense course would ever suggest going out unprotected.

That's so weird to me. I live in Vermont, and NOT having a knife on you is weird. When I started work, my boss saw my knife and I was like "uh oh!" but then he asked to see it and showed me his. Also one of my coworkers used to keep a gun on his desk to shoot whatever small lawn-tunneling animals were in the yard.

It's weird to remember that this shit doesn't fly in other areas. And creepy in your situation with police. Yikes.
