I was genuinely homeless for a few months this year and had only my purse and laptop for possessions after my apartment burned down. On the other hand, I was lucky enough to have a steady well-paying job and generous friends, so I never had to sleep on the streets. I was in the hospital for a few days, crashed on floors for a couple of weeks, stayed with my dad for a couple weeks while he was visiting my town, and then was able to settle in a cheap hostel until I found a new apartment.

Holy shit! That sounds rough. I'm glad you made it through that and that you had people there to help you.

And sorry to sound like a douche, but I'm glad you were able to have that kind of experience, and come out of it okay. Being grateful for being alive and well, and never taking a good life for granted is a wonderful thing.

Oh, believe me, I count my lucky stars and thank God regularly that I had such a relatively easy time of it. I still have a nasty scar and a healthy dose of PTSD I'm working through, but other than that I -- and as far as I know, everyone else who was involved -- are doing really well and I'm very grateful for that. I had like... Homelessness Lite or something like that. I mean, my hostel even had heating, which is a luxury here in Japan.

Thumbs up for that, dude. Hope you keep warm, fed, and safe in the future.

What. The. Fuck. is this comment?

So to get it out of the way, I have been incredibly lucky and had awesome friends who kept me from being homeless when I should have been. But, my ex? My ex was homeless, on the streets, or in a shelter, for about 10 years. When I was with him he would wake up at night screaming from flashbacks from what he went through. Because, on top of being homeless, he is trans and all the homeless shelters in his area were run by homophobic, transphobic Christian organizations.

But you know what he always said was the worst part? The fucking assholes who would tell him that he should be grateful for those experiences because it somehow made him a ~better person and ~taught him to value what he had. Somehow, he doesn't feel that 20 years worth of severe PTSD that is crippling in his day to day life is worth ~being grateful, when the point should be that nobody should have to go through that and instead of putting the focus on people being ~grateful, there should be better systems in place so people don't have to.

And what you're doing all through this thread is casting judgement on pretty much everyone who responds, even the people you are agreeing with. Guess what, people don't need some random fucking stranger on the internet to tell them that, yeah, what they went through is ~real deprivation.

I'm sorry you had a rough time and went through all that with people judging you, but you are being a judgemental asshole all over this fucking thread. Stop it.

And yes, I am fucking angry here because it is because of people like you that had to go on this bullshit with my ex and trigger him bad enough that it was something he dealt with for days or weeks. Privileged assholes were bad enough, but the people who went through the same things always seemed to judge even harder, and that is exactly what you are doing here.
