Re: Live without

Hold on let me think.
Without electricity: The longest time was when I was a little kid so I don't remember much of it. I was in the winter for about a week I think. We shifted furniture around in the family room so everyone could sleep there, because we very fortunately had a fireplace.

I've gone an entire winter depending on two small electric heaters(which actually worked pretty damn well, to be honest.) because the place I lived in had both heater/AC units die, which led to no AC but a window unit in my bedroom for two summers, a week of which was spent with no AC at all in 100+ degree weather when my old Window unit died on me.

I went without water for about three days, because something, I'm still not sure what, broke. After my water problem was fixed my toilet was broken until I was finally able to move out of there, which was about two months.

Ehhh, I'd hesitate to call that deprived, though. Uncomfortable, yeah, but not deprived.

More like having to live in the sort of situation you described for years, with no hope of getting out of it, no money to buy an upgrade or a replacement, and only the prospect of being able to survive through it.

I'm familiar with these kinds of situations, except it's just how I lived, and still sporadically live. You can't do anything to change or get out of the situation, so you just have to hope that what you have will be enough to keep you alive. Even if it's a 20 yr old box fan in the middle of 100+ degree heat, or a lot of blankets for 20-below-zero cold.

All the same, I'm glad everything worked out for you, and that you were able to get away from those places.

For not being "one of those butthurt check your privilege type of comments", you are being pretty judgmental about other people's shitty living situations.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be judgmental, just trying to determine a line that I wasn't specific enough about in my original post. I'm not trying to make you feel bad, I'm just trying to figure something out for myself, and maybe get people to see that living in conditions more commonly associated with 3rd world countries is still something we face,

It does suck that you had to go through that, and I am sorry that it happened, but it's not quite the same as living in a state of deprivation as default.

What I've been trying to figure out is how many people have been subjected to long term periods of going without basic amenities because they simply can't access them.

Why do you need to determine a line at all?

Again, I'm sorry for not being clear. What I meant was that I was trying to clarify my original point, like, "I see what you mean, but I meant more along the lines of xyz."

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad people responded with their experience, but because of my faulty phrasing, it hadn't been what I was asking. Again, not that I wasn't glad that they shared, I had just been trying to clarify what I meant.
