Do SPN or Sherlock fans think that their ship will be canon? I only know about SPN fandom secondhand and I lost interest in Sherlock fandom awhile ago, but I never really saw those sentiments. When I first started reading the secret, my first thought was One Direction/Larry Stylinson (since I'm way too immersed in 1D rn), but when I finished reading I realized OP probably meant a fictional character ship and immediately thought of Teen Wolf/Sterek.

A good many Dean/Castiel shippers in the SPN fandom are RABID about how the ship either is canon, or it's a grave social injustice or deliberate slight to the fans on the part of the creators if it's not/doesn't become canon. Drives me up a freaking wall.

Dean/Castiel really does fit because some of the fans truly believe it's destiny, true love, and very much canon... even though it's not canon at all. But I'm still thinking Sterek.

You've all seen the top post, right?

Someone had once commented somewhere that the showrunners of SPN are homophobic because they don't make Dean/Castiel canon. Nevermind the fact that Dean is canonically hetero and that Castiel is non human. By some people's logic, if the writers weren't so homophobic, Destiel would have happened by now.

So I don't think Destiel is or should be canon but I don't understand how Dean being canonically hetero proves the showrunners aren't homophobic. Couldn't that bolster arguments that they are?

You make an interesting and valid point...because I do get the sense that there is some level of homophobia with this show. The show does seem to have an undercurrent of homoeroticism, which I'm not sure if it's fanservice or queerbaiting.

But in regards to what I was referring to, it was SPN tinhatting. The person said (I'm paraphrasing because I can't find it), "Sera Gamble is a homophobic bitch. She refuses to make Cas and Dean canon when it is clear to everyone that they have a magical bond. Ugh, assholes, just let them have sex."

fanservice and queerbaiting in this sense are the same thing, it's fanservice by queerbaiting.
