Stories in which different societies collide, and everything about one culture is challenged by the other and heavily examined by the text, especially when one tries to unfairly conquer the other and gets roundly defeated. Really fond of it, but it's hard to find where that's the entire plot and not interrupted by a bunch of stuff I don't care about.

Oh, thanks! I keep meaning to read more detail about Japanese and US American relations over history, but I didn't know where to start. That seems like a good book to do it with.

LaFeber's a first rate historian, but he writes in a very accessible style. This was required reading for my MA, and I loved it (more than, say, Foucault, augh).
