Anon from the FE Fandom here, Hi and Hug from me about your post. :D

I don't deny that Character 2 is important to Character 1, but I think the fandom really ruined it for me in the Romantic-Ship sense. I've thought about it outside that and the main reasons as to why I can't bring myself to ship them is it comes back to really three things:

Character Two is going to outlive Character 1 due to his being half human and the other half is a race that lives for 2000 years of age. Not saying he'll reach that high of a number* (*debatable) but it's still a long time and he could change and not so much open up to a whole crowd of people, but there would have to be others that he'd meet and call friend, if acquaintance.

The second reason is that the Main Hero is of the personality that he'll help people in anyway he thinks that he can. He knows it's naive of himself to think this way, even after all that he's gone through, but he can't turn his back and leave them without something. Especially if he'd been the cause of what they've gone through, or what they're going to go through. It's in his core character and Character 2 shouldn't be a special priority as though he's the only one the Hero has as a friend.

The last reason is that it seems to be foreshortening Character 2's possible growth and development post that era of time (FE9/FE10, specifically) it's more so in fandom then in canon? He's portrayed as someone who just clings so desperately to this one person that he won't grow out or beyond that and it irritates me when people do this? Character Two is really smart and as brilliant as he is, it's painful to think that he won't even snap out of it and think for a better life for himself.

In the case of the Hero's Descendant and the next game: It's not released to us just yet, but we were told finally that we'd get it sometime in the Quarter Two of 2013. Don't feel bad, I don't have a 3DS either. Try and avoid the spoilers too, if you can. The game looks great, imo.
