If you're attracted to a character because you relate, that's usually different than being attracted because you're fetishizing, though (and that's not quite the correct word but, argh, I hope it sorta gets across what I mean; it's the closest I can think of at the moment). I think what the OP is saying is that she(?) has noticed men being attracted to these characters for problematic reasons (and TBH I have noticed a LOT of guys say that they don't identify w/ female characters but are instead attracted to them) -- and that would not really be true of someone IDing with a character for their personality and traits, if that makes sense.
