There actually were scholars at the 13th-century University of Paris whose work we know only from their students' notes. (Any professor's worst nightmare!)

Not just that... isn't there a lot of things where we only really know about it from student's notes? I'm pretty sure there's things well into the 19th century where that's the case - for instance, de Saussure's major work, some of Weber's work. It's much more common than you would think well into the modern era.

Oh! And the big example I was thinking of is that a lot of Hegel's work was published posthumously based on notes taken at lectures he had given.
