Tattoos?

[personal profile] ryttu3k 2012-10-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Prompted by the poster above who just got a new tattoo, who here has one? Who wants one? Who wants more than one?

And out of curiosity, what's your stance on fandom tattoos?

Confession time - I have a fandom tattoo (inside left ankle). It's the Sheikah eye symbol from the Zelda games, with the top triangle replaced with a Triforce. I figure that even if I end up falling out of love with the fandom, it still represents a lot of happy moments from basically my entire teenage years and early-to-mid twenties, and I like the ideas behind it - truth for the Sheikah part, balance for the Triforce part.

The poetry thread reminded me of wanting to get a line from Prufrock (favourite poem), too - "Do I dare disturb the universe?" Only question is where to put it.

What about you?

I love body mods but I'm going to try and contain myself!

Do you mind if I glomp onto your thread and ask if anyone here has scarification or scarification with a tattoo overlaid (or even if you have a tattoo that overlaps a natural scar)? And if they were happy with the result, how the healing process was for them. If the scars have thinned or faded over the years?

As for placement? This is one I love.

I've only ever had temporary home-made tattoos (Where you push the ink under a couple of layers of skin with a needle so it lasts for two-three months). But I want so badly. Getting a tattoo/scarification is probably one of the first things I'm going to do for myself when I'm on my own.

And I also feel like it's the appropriate thread to bring this up?

"Shelley Jackson’s Skin project, a 2095-word story published exclusively in tattoos, one word each on as many willing volunteers, so it can never be read in its proper order, but just exists, pulsing, out in the world at all times."

I love the idea of scarification. I want to try it so badly but I'm really weird about letting other people cause pain (aka control freak). I've been reading up on it and thinking about trying it myself.

I'm jealous of your temporary home-made tattoos. Did you do them yourself?

Re: I love body mods but I'm going to try and contain myself!

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-10-08 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yup! But I'm pretty sure I wasn't doing it very safely and it wasn't a good idea. I didn't have training or the right equipment. I never had any infections or problems but I knew two other kids who did. Luckily I had enough sense not to do them on other kids or get mixed up in that.

They looked very cool for a while but they healed and flaked off at uneven rates and looked kinda funky for a while.

I experimented with some scarification/branding on myself but over the past couple of years they've faded to almost no visibility. Not sure if I did them incorrectly or if I just heal differently.

IDK how feasible it is but if you are serious about scarification but don't want someone else to do it you might find an artist/nurse who would be willing to teach/supervise you?

I know some tattoo artists who are familiar with it and I've been talking with them. I'm friends with a few body mod people also and been talking with them about various mods and techniques. It's one of those things I think would be super cool but probably won't ever get around to doing.

I do have a few itty bitty scars that I've made but like you said, they fade. I think I might heal a bit faster than average.

Oh that's cool! I wish I knew some people in my area so I could get some first-hand information and see some stuff up close. Even if you don't ever get around to having a body mod done it's still a very fascinating subject.

I've been reading about a method common in Africa called packing that involves placing a sterile material in the wound to irritate it and require the scar tissue to grow outwards to push the material out. It's supposed to have a high rate of exaggerating scars for people who don't normally retain them. But there's not a lot of reliable material about it and I keep reading something about different materials (clay, ash, etc.) causing different colorings in the scar tissue but don't have any citations or proof of that.

For me, I think picking or irritating the wound as it heals produces a more reliable scar. I definitely don't use honey as an antiseptic! That causes it to heal up so quickly and neatly.

I do have a tiny keloid from an accidental injury that gives me hope of creating a permanently noticeable scar but I have no idea what made that scar different from my others. It was from broken glass and has remained the same for something like six years but a pretty gruesome burn on my knee has healed so completely I can barely see it.

I love tattoos on other people but don't really care for the idea on my own body.

As for fandom tattoos....it depends. Tats of actors faces or signature I think are weird. Symbols and quotes I think can be cool. It really depends.

I want one (or two, or you know, five). One actually is a fandom one, I personally like them when they're more 'subtle' like a symbol or something like what you (OP) did. :) No faces, no logos/names, just something that really does look like art.

i'm going to be honest, the only tattoos i want are fandom tattoos. to be specific, the overwatch elite crest, seal of metatron, and the halo of the sun

i was also dabbling with maybe the followers cross, but it seems a bit too close to a crucifix to me, and i don't want people mistaking me for a christian. then i was like, maybe i should get the legion bull, but i'm not sure how keen i am about having gigantic bull testicles on my body for the rest of my life. so maybe i'll stay away from both of those.

in any case i dont have any tattoos yet, but it's mostly a matter of me having no money than anything else. i've been sitting on the first three for... a good few years now, and i'm still pretty enthusiastic about getting them. i honestly dont feel like i'd regret them at all.

That halo of the sun design is lovely.

isn't it? it seems to be a pretty common tattoo among silent hill fans, and i've seen it done very well quite a few times, which is reassuring.

For the longest time I wanted to get a tiny tattoo of an ankh, below where most of my abdominal muscles ended and just to the right of my left hipbone. I wanted to get it because I grew up in a rather socially conservative house, with the odd but vaguely understandable message of, "Being gay is fine, but sex is something that should only happen with the person you're married to!" (I'm a lesbian, btw.) Basically the idea was it was a promise ring, but cooler: if I'd gone through that much pain, it ought to be someone special who can see the result. (Also I think I stole the notion out of a book, but for the life of me I can't remember which one.)

Luckily I didn't go through with that, because to me now, it sounds really dumb. If I feel like I'm ready for sex, then I will be, never mind a tattoo.

Somewhere between then and now (which is an excellent book title/band name/song name/whatever), I realized I'm a sub, and while I still don't have a tattoo or plan to get one, I have this amazingly unrealistic fantasy about my Domme giving me a tattoo, or scarring words or a symbol into me. IRL, I know it'd be really unsafe unless said Dom is a professional tattoo artist, but to me, it feels more permanent, and more intimate, than anything else that would bind me forever to another person. Plus, depending on the placement, it'd be something I could show off, to say, look, I belong to this person.

(Just to clarify, I am, again, aware that this is highly unrealistic, unsafe, and will probably never happen. But it's a lovely fantasy.)

i've wanted a lightning bolt for ages (as a simple harry potter tattoo) but i can't decide on where.

I really want a Calvin & Hobbes tattoo but it would look completely out of place with the overall effect of the other tattoos/scars I want.

I'm kinda trying out different styles and experimenting with format to see if I can find a way to make it look cohesive and I have a couple I like but nothing I love yet.

The only ink I've ever been tempted to take is the symbol in the icon here, on my back, directly behind the heart chakra. And between the fact that it's all straight lines, and I'm all fat and curves, I suspect it'd be really, really hard to do in a way that looked good. :-(

A friend of a friend has a tattoo of Heifer (Rocko's Modern Life), I think it's pretty cool. I mostly want original tattoos, but if I find a fandom I really love with some fascinating stylistic symbols, I might get one or two. Maybe come up with something representative of Devil May Cry.

I want a tattoo. I'm thinking something to follow my spine. Maybe a plant or a sentence.

I've always thought about it but I can never decide on something. I don't like things that are obvious. I wouldn't want a tattoo of a face or a famous symbol, but something specific to me.
