Except that the IDW Arcee thing is transphobic as hell and even without the transphobia defines femaleness as otherness.

I don't like going around calling everything problematic, but calling treatment of gender in IDW good... eh... nope.

I don't like the storyline either, but I disagree with it having any reference past what it means for the Cybertronian society.

Transformers aren't nice, regardless of writer. Jhiaxus is one of the least nice among them. Chances are he KNEW it would be psychologically traumatizing. Blaster told Perceptor he'd "defiled" himself by changing his purpose. The government was apparently judging as hell towards Whirl. Only the very VERY rich are accepted as monoformers. Roberts has now created what is essentially prostitution for those who want to spend some time with a different/form function.

Badly handled, but it is a reasonable explanation for why there are about 5 individuals in a species of genderless that are very, VERY in keeping with the species we know as being of the female sex. It's not defining femaleness as otherness. It's defining the extreme minority of otherness. Which species do. But five dogs of one breed and one of another into a group, they will play more with one another. Same for sheep, who will not be accepting of a single sheep of a different breed or color, and goats. CERTAINLY for humans. The fact that the TFs were confused and didn't see Arcee quite the same rings true to me. Not nice, but true.

Then again, I've never gotten the concept of "problematic". I recognize it's not right. Of all the things Jhiaxus has done, forcing someone to be something that didn't exist is pretty fucking low, but seems in-character to me. As does the reaction of the rest of the species.

I'm not saying Jhiaxus isn't a bastard. I am saying that I think Furman has a long, clear tradition of being REALLY creepy about gender, and that storyline is the last and most popular installment in it.

I am not saying he shouldn't write whatever he wants. I am saying that I'm allowed to disapprove, and that it shouldn't get some magical "oh but the character's an asshole," as if that means Furman's issues are not blatantly obvious and kind of creepy.

Clearer now?
