As someone who basically agrees with the OP (well, I've seen his appeal before, but I found him hotter in this movie than most), I think this is a large part of why. His character is scary and messed up, but at least he's not hideously goofy/annoying/sappy.

For me, be it fiction or real life, nothing's as big a turn-off as stupidity. And I've had dumb guys who were really hot, so I tried to ignore it, but the more you get to know them, the weaker the attraction, until you just have to admit defeat and be like "my instincts refuse to let me do the breeding act with the stupid - and apparently don't understand the concept of condoms. Fuck you, instincts!"
