I'm not saying that all mainstream anime is bad- I'm not saying anything like that at all. In fact I said I do like some, like Fullmetal Alchemist. And I do know some are popular for a reason.

Anyway, I'm not even talking epic battling shounen anime. I'm talking anime in general. A lot of kids hop onto the anime bandwagon because they think it's cool and get into the only anime they can get their hands on, which isn't a lot... and then call themself an anime fan when all they like is the popular stuff. It's just a little annoying. I'm not saying people shouldn't like popular anime or anything like that because I adore a lot of popular shows and comics... and yeah, I adore them like other people because they're good! However calling yourself an anime fan because you like Naruto is pretty obnoxious. I know a lot of kids who do that.

Um. The kid is then. O_o

And lots of people start with that anime and get more and more into it. That was DBZ for me. And I started Bleach before it was dubbed anyway, and lots of fans did that with Naruto too.

Liking one anime doesn't make you an anime fan, it means you like that one specific anime- but it doesn't mean you're a fan of multiple japanese cartoons.

I never said it was wrong to like only Naruto either, I just think it's kind of stupid to walk around calling yourself an anime fan when all you really like is one show. I have nothing against people just getting into anime through shows like Naruto. I got into anime through Yu-Gi-Oh! and I don't know what anime was more popular than that in america a couple years ago. (Although I got into it before it was so majorly popular, still.)

Anyway, I think you keep mistaking what I write as me trying to bash new anime fans or fans of popular shows but the only people I'm 'bashing' are the annoying kids I meet around school and at the mall who say they love anime but have only seen the dubbed Fullmetal Alchemist. That makes them a fan of Fullmetal Alchemist, not japanese animation in general.

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think it's wrong to call yourself an anime fan if you like Naruto.

Maybe it is if you only like Naruto and nothing more. Some people simply don't have the time to watch anymore more or whatever. I don't think it's a big deal to call themselves as such.

I don't think it's wrong to call yourself an anime fan if you like Naruto.

I don't either, but I do think it's wrong to call yourself an anime fan if Naruto is the SOLE AND ONLY anime you like and watch. That's all I'm saying.

I disagree to a degree. If you've tried others and don't like any but Naruto, I can see where you're coming from.

If you've only watched Naruto and loved it and haven't watched anything else, than calling yourself an anime fan is fine, though probably better to say 'casual anime fan'.

[identity profile] icthyopook.livejournal.com 2007-08-11 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I've never really heard of a 'casual' anime fan; and I still don't believe you can be an anime fan if you haven't seen multiple anime... I just don't think it works that way. I'd say if you REALLY LIKE 5+ anime shows, then you're a fan of anime in general, you're attracted to the japanese animation style. But if you've only seen and liked ONE show done in the japanese animation style, how can you say you're a fan of the style?

Let me ask you this. If you met someone who liked The Simpsons but disliked all other american cartoons they'd ever seen or just hadn't seen any others aside from The Simpsons in their life, would you consider them a fan of american cartoons?

Or if someone really likes peaches but has never tried another type of fruit, are they a fruit lover?

Just because someone owns a cat and loves that pet cat to death- does that make them a cat lover?

No. :/ It just means they like The Simpsons, or they like peaches, or they love their pet cat.

If someone watches and loves Naruto but has never seen another japanese cartoon in their life, they're not a fan of anime, they're just into Naruto.

I actually agree, I just don't completely.

But it's more by circumstance, imo.
