That's just BEGGING for someone to come along and Lv. 5 Death you.

I ragequit FF8 for a week when that happened to my lv100 party on the way to fight Ultimecia.

I like showing my character favoritism by having gross level/usage imbalances. <_< But my brother shares your sentiment, OP. In his most recent FF6 playthrough he delayed the final dungeon for a week so he could get all his characters at the same level.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
This is actually not that uncommon. I mean, it's OCD as all fuck, but plenty of people do it.

What I hate is when characters (or pokemans) level at different rates, and you've got everyone at level 99...EXCEPT THAT ONE DUDE.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
yeah I used to be that way too. Like when I first played P3 I kept going back to switch out party members every 5 levels or so just to grind them up so they would be even again. That actually fucked me over a couple times (like I felt like I had to face Nyx with Ken instead of my usual healer, Yukari, and while I'm sure someone who used Ken more had no problems it was just way more of a struggle than it needed to be.)

And I'd switch out party members in FF12 every level they gained just because it was so easy.

I don't really do that anymore because I realized it was dumb. I think it hit me first when I started trying to do the same thing in P4 that i did in P3 until I realized everyone was garbage except for a few characters, so I ended up using them for EVERYTHING.

I still thank god for games like Mass Effect though, where all of your party members level up along with you.

Had Ken, Yukari, and Akihiko in her final party. With Gungnir on Ken and the best sword on the MC. What really annoyed me was that Akihiko would use magic instead of physically attacking.

I agree on most of the characters in P4 are crap. Yukiko, Chie, Yosuke was my final arrangement. And even then, Yosuke wasn't that great. I wish Naoto didn't only have Light and Dark skills. If Naoto was any good in boss fights...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I used Yukiko, Teddie and Yosuke lol. I used the bufu spells way more and the status healing and extra spells were always super handy. If Teddie wasn't so damn useful I probably would have used Chie more.

It's like looking into a mirror.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
In Persona games I didn't feel bad about not leveling up every playable character, but I did get really angry when my party of four wasn't equal in levels. Considering that the MC can't be switched out and I can't let him die so the others would get more EXP than he does, I was angry pretty often.

I did try to level up everyone in Suikoden Tierkreis though...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I got into the same habit with Ogre Battle, I kept my main party's level low by spreading the exp around to the rest of my army which meant everyone was pretty evenly leveled. I've been doing this with Pokemon and everything else ever since. It's a pain in the ass but I can't stop.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly hate how in some games, like FFVII, the main character has to stay in your party, so s/he always gets a lot higher than the non-active characters.

I'm replaying FFVII now (with cloud saves! lol) and Cloud and Aeris are almost equal level, which makes me happy, but sad because Aeris dies. :-/

Eh, I usually don't notice, unless it's Pokemon and then I just set a minimum level to get everyone over by certain points in the game.

I've been replaying Golden Sun: Dark Dawn lately and spent some time with the Clones and the Kaocho Warrior Rats glitch getting everybody over L20. And then I went and picked up Amiti, who was L14.

And I went, "... FUCK" and went back to whore Warrior Rats until he was L19 and everybody else was L23.

(and now everybody's like, L28 and Sveta is L22. FUCK. I'm going to rage so goddamn hard when I get to Eoleo and Himi, aren't I?)

It bugs the hell out of me, too! I have no idea why.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree with you. XD It just bugs me. But trying to get them all at the same level...it's just painful. Like when I was playing FFX, I had to try and make sure to keep switching characters for every. Single. Fight. Just so I don't abuse my preferred party. And after each fight, I had to switch them back for my preferred starting party.

When I first played FFVIII, I didn't do that and my preferred party ended up like ten levels ahead of my less favourite. I'm replaying it now though and it's annoying because I need to have them all at one level and the best way to get extra EXP is to make the finishing blow, which I try and give to the lowest level at the expense of everyone else. So it's a little annoying.

In short, I feel your pain and it's frustrating but hey, it's a better outlet for my OCD tendencies than my actual OCD tendencies.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I had no idea this was such a common sentiment. I personally don't care what their levels are, as long as the lowest-leveled party member is still at a level decent enough to not suck.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Never play Radiant Historia, OP. I love it, but at least one character gets taken out for a huge chunk for plot reasons, and by the time he is accessible again he's decently underleveled. And there are some characters you'll just never touch, because there are simply better options.

(in saying that though, there was at least one character that I used always that most people seem to hate, and vice versa. It might be dependent on playing style, this)

it reminded me about leveling up in FFIX. Beat all fucking Yans till you get 99lv!!! it took time. but it was fun :)

When it's just minor level differences I usually yell "so glad you could join us" when the last one levels up and have a giggle, but when there's one character that is way ahead of the others because he's always in the party while the others get in and out and... argh.
