I told my brother (who spends all day playing WoW) that I thought this was based on the Kung-Fu Panda movies and I thought he was going to bust an artery he got so mad

whoops

Every time I see the TV commercial, I think it's for a Kung-Fu Panda sequel.

My boyfriend plays WoW and he himself said it was basically Po. From what I've heard...yeah. It's Kung Fu Panda. :X

Meh. Not to sound like a butthurt fangirl (I will, but let it be heard that I don't want to), but what you've heard probably didn't cover much if your boyfriend likened Chen to Po. Not to mention that Pandaren kind of came before Kung-Fu Panda and that the game kind of has nothing to do with Kung-Fu or believing in yourself.

They both run on chinese magical land atmo and that's really it.

Oh comp[letely. Blizzard took the idea of pandas, which totally originated with Kung Fu Panda and Po, and used that for their game. They totally weren't in their games 6 years earlier.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Except that it's not? Sure they're both anthro pandas from a ~magical land but that's where the similarities end, and Chen is nothing like Po.

Wait, it's not?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not - Blizzard actually started working on that particular race...I think roughly a year or so before Kung Fu Panda went into production [I can't swear that's how long it was, but I do know that they started before KFP was being made], and I think a Pandarian actually showed in one of their other games [Warcraft 3, I think?] so it honestly has nothing to do with KFP.

Plus, aside from ~*Magical Asian Atmosphere*~ the two actually aren't that much alike [and the character the OP mentions mainly shows in the trailer and for like...2-3 quests in game.]

SA

At least, if it's who I think it is, that's about how long he's in the game. I haven't really played the area/part he'd be in as yet.

There's a fairly lengthy quest chain involving Chen, his niece Li Li, their partner in brewing, and assorted shenanigans in the Valley of the Four Winds that leads you up to the instance gate for the Stormstout Brewery dungeon.

Yes, the brewery is the dungeon. There are alementals. IT IS AWESOME BEYOND THE TELLING OF IT.

And, no, Chen is absofuckinglutely nothing like Po. For one thing, he's not the comic relief.

AYRT

I never said he was like Po - I just said that the setting was similar, and that's where it ended...But thanks for the heads up about the dungeon - it sounds awesome!

Anon, and the other anons in this thread, calm your tits a little bit, okay? I'm in the middle of the Valley questline right now and really enjoying it, but it's not the end-all-be-all of storytelling (and Chen does have comic relief aspects, come on). And Kung-Fu Panda was a perfectly nice movie, it's not like anyone's comparing WoW to Shark's Tale, here.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Point. If anyone compared, say, Vash'jir to Shark's Tale I'd really have to flip my shit. ~_^

WoW pandas came from one of the artists at Blizzard, who had the nickname "panda" when he was younger. After his daughter's birth, he drew a pic of an anthro panda dad with a cub on his back. It circulated around work, and more pics were added.

As an April Fool's joke, Blizzard took those pics, made up a bit of lore to go with them, and posted that pandas were going to be the new race in Warcraft. Players loved the idea and were bummed when they realized it was just a joke.

Chen Stormstout (the panda in the secret) was added to the Warcraft games later on, about six years before Kung Fu Panda came out in theatres.

TL;DR, nope.

Players loved the idea and were bummed when they realized it was just a joke.

Funny how this statement is almost opposite today. At least in the most vocal parts of the WoW fanbase...

As often happens, the people who either a) have no problem with it or b) are actually ENJOYING themselves ... have better tings to do than shadowbox with idjits, and so tend to keep their mouths shut.

Lol, I made the same mistake until I Googled the name.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
samwise didier has been tossing around the panda idea way longer than kung-fu panda has existed. there were pandaren in warcraft 3 i believe.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Even if it's nothing like Kunf-Fu Panda, that trailer looks too much like Po's daydream from the beginning of the film for me to be able to take it seriously.
