costumes/cosplay

[personal profile] saku 2012-10-08 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
i just bought all the supplies i'll need for my halloween costume (minus lipstick) and it was almost $140 USD, and that's with promo codes and careful searching for cheaper options. is this normal?? i told my mom i thought it'd be about $80 and she side-eyed that (i feel like i have to get her approval for everything) so when it ended up being way more i felt like shit after buying everything.

i'm going as meulin from homestuck and i bought a lot of stuff but a good portion of the price came from my clothes, which i will wear even after halloween, so i feel like in the long run it's not too bad. that seems pretty average for clothes, really?? two shirts, a skirt, knee-high socks and leggings for like $45.

idk i still feel guilty though. i don't like spending my money because i have so little of it. i haven't dressed up for halloween in a long time and i've never cosplayed so i have no clue if it's normal to spend this much.

If it's cosplaying I'd say it's pretty normal? I mean that's usually what I pay. A halloween costume bought wholesale is prolly cheaper tho.

Well, if you can wear it a separates then it's not money wasted. You are just using it for more than one reason. And, no, that's not much money for a DIY costumes. Some people spend up to three times as much. Though, some people do spend less but those are the people who plan their costume a year in advance.

I think that's probably normal. cosplay just seems to sap money pretty quickly. Still, it's not so bad if you can wear the clothes anyway, and if you can re-use some of the other cosplay stuff in future for similar things.

I don't know; I've usually got most of my supplies from yard sales or Goodwill or the like; or bought the fabric and made it myself. Listening to my friends talk about their cosplay, $145 sounds like you're getting off cheap, though; and if you can wear it again (which is something I generally look for, as well), that's all the better.

I understand the guilt about money being tight, though. I'm still trying to decide if I can afford some art books for my main fandom, and two of them are going to run at least as much as your costume, and there are five I want.

i had to buy two different shades since i heard ben nye's grey is too dark for troll skin, so i got the grey plus white so i can mix them. i bought sealant too and that all together was like 20 bucks.

i should have made the horns and teeth myself but i have scarce access to that kind of stuff right now so i just bought some online.

really i think i did okay money-wise, it's just still a lot of money for a costume imo. i did as well as i could at least. shipping really killed me though.

Yeah, I can't afford Ben Nye's grey right now so I went with a cheaper light grey off amazon (and thank god for prime), plus sealant. Contacts are just no go right now. My horns cost about 12, I think, and the person even gave me home made soap.

The money feels killer right now but I figure I'll be using this stuff again so it'll be worth it.

That's a week's pay for me. Which is why I will not be dressing up this year.*sadface*

Sounds like that's a lot of stuff you can wear independent of the costume, so not much money wasted! So yeah think of it as buying a lot of clothes at once instead of costume materials.

Well now I feel a lot better about how much I spent on my costume. xD

But yeah if it's mostly stuff you'll be able to wear again that sounds fine to me. That's how I justified spending £40 on a jacket for halloween. >_>

That doesn't sound bad, especially since you had to buy those horns and grey makeup. I also try to make some of what I buy for my cosplay are stuff I can wear in real life, and I always do that with shoes, since they end up being the most expensive part most of the time. I just made a Stiles cosplay that ended up turning out more expensive than I thought it would be (though it was still like $50, so not too bad), so I know that guilt. I often try to buy my clothes from a thrift store to save costs as well, so maybe try looking into that for the future, if you haven't been already.
