I'm fine with asexuals. It's just the people who identify as "gray ace" or "demisexual" that are fucking morons.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
gray ace is asexual tho

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Gray aces (according to AVEN wiki):

-do not normally experience sexual attraction, but do experience it sometimes
-experience sexual attraction, but a low sex drive
-experience sexual attraction and drive, but not strongly enough to want to act on them
-people who can enjoy and desire sex, but only under very limited and specific circumstances

So it's basically a special snowflake way of saying you have a low libido.

those are the ones that tend to do what OP is describing

and they insist that they 'fall under the asexual spectrum' and that that in turn means they're queer

annoying as shit

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Do people actually do that, though? I mean, off of Tumblr?

I'm gray-a but I have never thought of myself as queer, nor have I met any other asexuals (who weren't trans) that called themselves queer either.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, yeah, people do it all the time. On tumblr and off tumblr. What, does the shit asexuals on tumblr do and say not count or something?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
da

I'm an asexual guy who likes dating guys so I'm pret. sure I'm queer lol. Openly homoromantic aces seem to be invisible in this conversation tho.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
lol we always are invisible in these convos

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
That's because the people being criticized are heteroromantic or aromantic asexuals, not homoromantic or biromantic asexuals.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
But nobody says that. They just say "asexuals" as if the rest of us don't exist or count.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Are you claiming that you are queer because you are asexual? No? Then why would you assume that a comment complaining about people claiming they're queer because they're asexual - not because they're homoromantic or biromantic, but because they're asexual - is talking about you?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
You do know there's a huge subset of queer people that don't consider openly homoromantic aces to be queer because "we don't have ~real queer sex~", right?

Right?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Or say because you don't want to have sex, you're really just a homophobic misogynistic asshole, regardless if the only thing you said was 'I'm a homoromantic asexual'. sigh

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and?

The comment you were replying to was explicitly criticizing straight asexuals. It has nothing to do with what you're describing, so why bring that up?

And yet that never really gets mentioned, does it?

Everyone is just saying 'asexuals' like there is a huge monolithic romantic orientation.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Read the comment the anon was replying to.

It's talking about people that claim they're queer because they're asexual. The comment was explicitly talking about people that are not homoromantic or biromantic, because if someone is romantically attracted to members of the same sex they're obviously not going to be classifying themselves as queer because they are asexual.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
And read the other comments. Some people actually don't consider homoromantic asexuals to be queer because they don't have sex. Even though what you do in the bedroom doesn't matter to asshats on the street.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, AND?

What does this have to do with the perfectly valid criticism of straight asexuals appropriating terminology and labels from the lgbtq community?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
"heteroromantic or aromantic"

Seriously? I've never seen aromantics try to appropriate the word queer. That seems like mostly a heteroromantic tumblrsexual thing.

"Vegetables suck. Oh and by 'vegetables,' we only mean carrots and lettuce. We're gonna go ahead and say 'all vegetables' anyway though. Because this makes sense."

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
omg this is not that difficult.

If the only reason you identify as queer is because you fall under the asexual spectrum, ie, you are straight/heteromantic but because you're a grey-a or w/e you think you're asexual, that comment is directed at you.

If you identify as queer because you are in a samesex relationship with someon and/or are romantically attracted to people of the samesex, then that comment is not directed at you.

This isn't that hard to understand, guys.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
because you're a grey-a or w/e you think you're asexual*

should be because you're a grey-a or w/e you think you're queer

my bad

Biromantic Ace, so I *think* I fall under the spectrum? But honestly I just don't even bother telling people anymore. I just stand around conspicuously not hitting on anyone ever.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
da

I've seen some tumblr people do it, but it's tumblr so...it's special in that regard.

The general consensus seems to be if you are trans* or homo/bi/pan-romantic then it's okay to id as queer because of those reasons.
