TPratchett, you're breaking my heart over here

"There were only seconds left. Seconds had meant a lot to Bill Door, because he'd had a limited supply. They meant nothing at all to Death, who'd never had any."

What line of a book/movie/song/whatever has recently hit you right in the gut?

I was listening to Marina and the Diamonds' "Fear and Loathing" on a particularly bad day recently, and I ended up crying, though since I was in public I held back a lot.

"But I didn’t understand then. That I could hurt somebody so badly she would never recover. That a person can, just by living, damage another human being beyond repair."

Haruki Murakami, South of the Border, West of the Sun.

From Mulholland Drive, by The Gaslight Anthem:

"And I can still recall the hour when you first let down your walls
I thought I might've died right there floating up above it all
But it scared you love, to need someone, so you killed it all instead
But in the mist up on Mulholland, I could've sworn I heard you say

That I'd just die if you ever took your love away"

I can't recall anything recently at the moment, but bringing up Terry Pratchett: The Big Bad Wolf in Witches Abroad. ;_; I can never read that part and not have to pause till I've stopped crying.

Babel, by Mumford & Sons has a line 'Press my nose against the glass around your heart' and I don't know why, but it just hits be right in the gut every time I hear it.

Clicking around my iPod over the weekend and hit Janelle Monae's Many Moons, which is probably a perfect song.

Arvo Pärt's Fratres is a composition I can only bear once a year or so.

Fratres is gorgeous :O The texture reminded me a little of Penderecki's Threnody but it is much more pleasant to the ear. Thanks for the rec!

Signs That You're Too Invested In Fictional Characters - Random Words Edition

Innocent out-of-context words and phrases distract you and make you die a little inside while in the middle of going about your day! Most of which no one will automatically place even if they've seen the book/show/movie too:

"pole-vaulter"

"Am I done?"

"Call failed"

"Close your eyes"

"Seymour"

"hoppy bunnies"

"you can do better than that!"

I also choke up a little when I hear Mozart's Clarinet Quintet in A.

Not recently, but a line that always kills me is from Andrea Gibson's poem "Blue Blanket". The poem itself needs a trigger warning for rape, but the line works in a ton of different contexts:

"She said 'Tell me what gods you believe in. I'll build you a temple of mirrors so you can see them'."

I recently cross-stitched this line into a piece of cloth, I like it that much. It hits almost everything I love most about her work, and a lot of my own feelings about religion and belief.

Late to the party....
Ah, man, yes. Mr. Pratchett, he breaks your heart pretty damn consistently.

And - whatever anyone's issues with the book itself - the first line of 'Out of Africa' always makes me tear up.

"I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong hills...."

So much longing and grief and nostalgia in that one line....

"I am the resurrection and the life." - from A Tale of Two Cities. Knowing what happens to the character who says it right after that... It just hits home.
