My headcanon is that he doesn't actually live in his burned down home or the train station, he just prefers those places for his ~brooding~ and goes to an apartment at night, just letting everyone think he lives in his old house.

I'm only a little ways into the show and I'm convinced of this. If I was him, I wouldn't want the people around me to know where my refuge really is, either.
