Maybe you could try steering the conversation your way a bit more? If it's something you want to talk for a while about, state that at the beginning of the conversation. Like, "There's something that's really been bothering me. Can you listen a while?" so they know not to change the topic suddenly. And if they do change the topic, keep talking about what it is you want to talk about. That might sound rude or selfish, but I don't think it would be in this situation. Some people just need a little help with reading the moment.

I used to try this, but it didn't change much. Eventually I just gave up because it seemed like more effort than it was worth. Maybe I wasn't persistent enough? I DO still feel like it's a bit rude, but...I guess circumstances matter. Thanks for the suggestion, anon. <3
