Job/school advice?

[personal profile] khronos_keeper 2012-10-09 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hey guys, I could use some perspective on this.

I'm currently an MA student in my first semester of the program. I'm also taking out student loans to help cover the costs. However, my school does allow MA and PhD students to take up to 3 years off during that time to do stuff like work to get funds, or study for research, and still be retain their grad student status.

So I've been applying to different jobs, internships, and fellowships, some of which take up to a year away from school to complete, but would give me plenty of funding and additional experience and add overall to my concept as a person.

But is this misguided? Should I be concentrating on finishing my degree and getting off to the specific career field I want to get into, and take out loans to do that? Or is it okay to take 8 mo. to a year away from school to get more funding/experience, even though it puts me into a more roundabout route for my career aspirations?

FWIW, I'm looking on getting into the homeland/international security field, and all of the jobs or fellowships/internships/jobs I want to do are in foreign countries and teach language or focus on interaction with that culture.

why would it be misguided? as long as you WILL be returning to school within the timeframe they give you (thus retaining your grad student status), why would it be wrong to take a bit longer to finish your degree? sounds to me like getting a bunch of funding and experience under your belt is a pretty solid plan, and that's probably what i'd end up doing in your shoes.

Thank you! I dunno, I've just been so mixed up lately with the amount of coursework I have, and how much I feel like I don't know what I'm doing.

These are basically the things I'm fixing on (experience and funding), and hopefully they'll help me straighten myself out soon. The academic advice I've been getting from professionals has been less than helpful. :(

Your advisor SHOULD be able to help guide you, but I get advisors can be a mixed bag.

If you have definite plans and a timetable, etc., there's no reason not to.

My advice would be to bust your balls and finish your degree as quickly as you can. So much can intervene and derail an MA. I am still working on my Ph.D. because instead of hitting the ground running like I did with my MA, I dawdled and then had a baby and then I got a job and it's hard to teach 15-19 hours a semester AND work on a diss. LOL

Obviously you need to do what is best for you, but think carefully about whether you're planning to get married or commit to a partner or have children or if you might have family who are elderly or ailing that you will have to care for, etc. that could interfere with completing your degree on time.

Good luck!

Uh nah, I'm absolutely going to stay single without kids for the duration of this degree. Mostly it's just about taking at most a year for contract jobs or fellowships, is all.

But thank you!
