Anime Rec Thread

[personal profile] ill_omened 2012-10-09 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
So in honour of finally getting a decent connection back, I'm looking into getting a series or two to watch on the go.

I guess Madoka is the big thing recently right? Probably going to pick that up, though I haven't watched any magical girl shows which it's supposedly a critique of which might hamper fully getting it. Then again, Evangelion was one of the first animes I watched and even without the background for everything it was doing I really enjoyed it. What else worth watching has hit the market recently?

I've got a fairly broad range genre wise, so unless it's really pandering I'm willing to give it a fair try if it's good.

The most recent anime I've watched because of laziness and uninterest in was Tatami Galaxy, which I really enjoyed. I think it came out last year but I only got to it this summer.
I also stand by Kuragehime very much.

Kuragehime was sooo so good. I wish there was more, but what exists is just magical and lovely.

I haven't been watching as much anime lately, but my husband and I recently marathonned Fate/Zero, and we both really enjoyed it. We also started Fate/Stay Night (which came out before Fate/Zero, but chronologically comes later,) and I gave up partway through. He finished watching it, but neither of us liked it as much.

Oh! I'm not sure if it's still recent, but Durarara!! is really good. I adored it and pimp it out whenever I get the chance. (Similarly, I really liked Baccano!. (Curse you, exclamation marks that are part of the name. Curse you.))

A lot of my friends seem to really like Mawaru Penguindrum, but I haven't watched it much. I've started rewatching Revolutionary Girl Utena recently, too, and they've been releasing remastered DVDs lately, so that's sort of like hitting the market recently, right...?

Oh, and Ergo Proxy! It's another one where I haven't seen it all yet, but I already really enjoy it.

Tiger & Bunny. Everybody recs that, and there's a good reason for it.

Other than that, what have you seen already? I don't exactly hang out in the newest shows, but I might have some old gems worth looking into. :)

Madoka isn't really a ~critique~ of the magical girl genre, it's a pretty straight up mahou shoujo with some grimdark elements on top and a couple of subversions of the genre here and there. It's worth a watch though.
Anyway, how recent are we talking here? Some good ones from last year and this one, varied genres and lengths:
Madoka
Gosick
Hourou Musuko
Tiger & Bunny
Nichijou
Hanasaku Iroha
Steins;Gate
AnoHana
Mawaru Penguindrum
Usagi Drop
No. 6
Chihayafuru
Un-Go
Fate/Zero
Another
Mouretsu Pirates
Space Brothers
Shirokuma Cafe (ongoing)
Tsuritama
Sakamichi no Apollon
Hyouka
Lupin: Woman Called Fujiko Mine
Jinrui wa Suitashimashita
Utakoi

Newest season, barely started:
Shin Sekai Yori
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun
K
JoJo
Zetsuen no Tempest

I am probably missing a lot, but I think you'll find something you'll like here.

I haven't quite finished Chihayafuru yet, but from what I've seen it's VERY good. Princess Jellyfish is also quite good! Madoka Magica is also one of my favorite series ever, it's fantastic. I think it should still be understandable even if you don't know many magical girl series, it's very Evangelion-ish?

And I'm not sure if this is recent enough, but I also quite liked Shiki, although it ended up being a bit more cynical than I typically like in anime. Still really gripping once it gets going, though.

Hmm, I've been trying to catch up on a bunch of recent shows, so my recs may be back by a few years.

Definitely recommend Tatami Galaxy and Sakamichi no Apollon.

I really liked Trapeze, but it might take a few episodes to get past the mix of animation and real people (the portrayal of the nurse might be pandering, but it's honestly very small compared to the rest of the series). Kuragehime was also pretty cute but that cliffhanger ending!

You might have already seen then since they're by SHAFT, but I genuinely found Soredemo Machi Wa Mawatteiru and both seasons of Arakawa under the Bridge (can't remember if they did this a lot in the first season, but the clips after the ending in the second season were so good) to be pretty funny.

Right now, I'm watching Mirai Nikki and it's alright; I read the manga and enjoyed it before it started becoming too convoluted but it's entertaining. Same thing with Another, though I'm disappointed with the ending and general lack of the mystery I was expecting.

I really liked Ergo Proxy! I feel like I have to give it a rewatch to fully understand it, but what I did understand was interesting. But, if you've never seen Paranoia Agent, do it. The animation and story/stories are just amazing and even though it may seem to meander around episode eight, it comes together in the end. Like dang, I can never get episode six out of my head when I think about this show.
