It's not a tan if he looks like that year around and tans aren't permanent either. He is actually brown-skinned. There ARE some dark-skinned Japanese people, y'know.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if Aomine does have a dark-skinned South Asian ancestor in his family (there is a significant South Asian population in Japan), or even Black.

Although, in the end, I think that Aomine is supposed to embody all the Black athlete (stereotypes) but as a Japanese character (high level of athleticism, being a genius in streetball [which was created in Black neighborhoods in NYC], extreme cockiness). Like a NBA player. It's not unusual to find such characters in sports manga where it's centered around an popular foreign sport.

I always thought that Aomine's character design is largely meant to be the antithesis of Kuroko's. Hence he's dark because Kuroko is pale. Fujimaki seems to love contrasts and parallels (and triangles).

yeah idk much about sports manga tropes so i just assumed the ambiguous ancestry or ganguro-style tan lol.

am now cracking up at the idea of the creator being all like, lets have a character who looks and plays and acts like a black NBA player but is not actually black. like it may or may not have been the intention but it is still hilarious to me?

I don't know the manga at all, but it's also not unusual for Japanese boys to be more or less permanently tanned all year, since there's no winter hiatus for sports clubs. The baseball, rugby, tennis, track, kyudo, etc. teams spend just as much time outside in December as they do in June; the only difference is the sun setting earlier.

Except this is basketball, which is an indoor sport. They primarly practice indoors. Aomine would not have enough free time to maintain that deep of a tan that do lighten up in the winter no matter how much they are in the winter sun unless there's snow that lasts all winter.

Like I said, I don't know the manga. The comments in this thread refer to outdoor sports so I figured. Still, like the comment above mine said, there are also plenty of native Japanese people with darker skin who are not mixed.
