..but I think my boss is out to get me. I'm an assistant teacher and she's the head teacher in my classroom. She's become super controlling, and last year she prevented me from getting a better (full-time vs. my part-time) position in another classroom even though I told her I would like to have the benefits/more pay. But I let that slide because I took it as a weird compliment-- she didn't want me to leave her. But this school year she's gotten REALLY crazy (yelling at me and her other assistant constantly for no reason, leaving me alone with a whole classroom of kids without telling me if/when she is coming back, shouting at the kids) so I applied for a job at a different school and I have a really weird suspicion that the reason they're avoiding me now, even though they excitedly asked me to give them my schedule so they could interview me, is because they probably go to the same church as my head teacher (I live in a really small town and we have exactly one Catholic church; the school I work at now isn't Catholic but the one I applied to is).

Anyway I'm freaking myself out thinking she's blocking me in and I had to get it off my chest, and there's no one I can talk to about it :(

Damn, you have my sympathies, OP.

From your description... she sounds kind of psycho. Yelling at you? No, I'm sorry, but even if you're "below" her, you don't deserve to get yelled at.
And shouting at the kids is even worse!

If you're getting a gut feeling that something's off about this lady and what she's doing... you're probably right.

I would try to get out of there and find a better job ASAP. But try to find one where the staff don't have any connection to her, because it's possible she's been slandering you. (Happened to someone I know IRL, with a psycho coworker.)

yeah, the slandering is what I'm really worried about :( Since I live in such a small town, if she says something about me that gets passed around it could become impossible for me to get another teaching job. I just really don't want to have to change professions.. ugh

Could you talk to the principal? Maybe present the issue as "I'm worried about the teacher I work for, she's been acting strangely towards her students..."

You could also approach other staff members about your concerns. I senior teacher might be a good ally to have in your corner. (Obviously, you'd want to talk to people who don't seem to be buddy-buddy with this woman.)

I'd also follow up with the other school, if I were you. Call them back if they don't bother getting in touch with you.

I was avoiding going to the principal because I'm so in my own head about this... I don't know if maybe my anger at her for blocking me from moving last year is shading my perception of how she acts towards the kids or not. But actually today an assistant from another classroom said she saw my head teacher being rough with some of my kids when I wasn't in the room, so now I feel pretty confident that I'm not fabricating that part.

I didn't want to seem desperate to the other school... I've emailed twice already asking if/when they want to interview me (after my initial response to their invitation for an interview). But now I just want to know whether I should give up. And honestly, *why* they suddenly lost interest.
