OP, I apologise. I have zero clue what fandom this secret refers to, but I looked at the cartoon and made up my own canon.

Moustache AKA John Watson has been forced by his publisher to put his pen away and embrace the new steam-powered technology now available.

His friend and companion has simultaneously decided to run a series of experiments into the effects of distraction on productivity, and has sent 'Hylock Soames' to loom over Dr Watson's shoulder at innopportune times and record the good doctor's reactions.

Dr Watson senses something amiss, and is suspicious about the identity of the man behind the mask, but is too frustrated about his failure to write that he merely sighs in exasperation and shuts down the microfurnace.

FUCK YEAH, Last Days of Foxhound. The art might not be the best, but the story is nothing short of absolutly amazing.

Oh gosh, that brings back memories. I loved the SHIT out of the humor and the pacing in Foxhound Last. One of the few webcomics I made sure to follow all the way to the end. D:

I think the author was intentionally shipteasing them, if that makes you feel any better. Naomi's in-character Livejournal (foxdiegal) mentions that she sees it too:

Ocelot and Mantis are hanging out all the time, since a few months back. They think they're hiding it, but it's so obvious when Ocelot is giving Mantis a knowing wink every day over Mantis's morning coffee, and Mantis just blushes and runs out. The boys in R&D have been making no end of jokes about bondage gear, revolvers, and telekinetic stimulai of the rear male neural clusters. Well I couldn't think of any two people in the world who deserve eachother more.
