Madoka [Spoilers Obviously]
They set up the friend to have a selfless (well, mostly selfless) wish as a possibility, whilst leaving Madoka with the trivial wish and the straight forward desire to becoming a magical girl, and be special. A plot arc that in no way comments upon the audience, I'm sure.
When blondie bound Senjougahara I thought this is going to go badly, there is no way this hubris is not going to bite you in the ass, and the minute she started crying with joy I knew she was fucked. Still, whilst it's a solid twist, it's not unique to kill off a seemingly central character to demonstrate that shit is about to get real - and I'm interested to see how it plunges new depths in heartbreaking as has been suggested to me, or meets its 'need to watch' label.
I'll be interested to see whether they have Madoka and her friend eventually decide go back to pursuing a goal of being magical girls (well rather her friend does it for the boy, because he becomes sicker/she has some touching scenes of how much he hates his condition and Madoka tags along still idealising the role) or Kyubey keeps trying to force them into it, until they have to relent.
The former seems like it would resonate more effectively later on, but the latter has this cat being a massive dick, and despite doing very little so far I am loving that element that they are managing to get across of him (her? it?).
