Looking for new fandoms

[personal profile] badass_tiger 2012-10-11 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
At this point, I'm not even reading fanfiction because I ship stuff anymore, I'm just reading it for my boy-on-boy romantic fix. The only character I even remotely care about in any of my fandoms anymore is Gabriel from Supernatural. And yeah, I'm having a lot of fun looking up gen fic for him right now.

I want to get into a new fandom so badly. Is Elementary any good and if yes, what about it do you commend?

And what is Homestuck about and should I get into it?

Any fantasy book series you'd recommend?

The KingKiller Chronicle is amazing, but the fandom is non existant.

I imagine you have already read (or not, if it's not your cup of tea) A song of fire and ice series? (Game of Thrones it's the first one)

re: homestuck - basically it's about these kids who are internet friends. they all decide to buy and play a game together.

the game ends up signaling the end of the world as they know it and sends the kids on the greatest adventure of their lives. they meet a lot of people/creatures along the way, make a few enemies, etc.

Homestuck is about four kids who play a game that bring about the end of the universe. In the process, so many things go wrong while they're playing that it actually affects an entirely different game session (which is being played by an alien race called trolls, as you have probably heard). So they have to find a way to bend the rules so they can beat the game and gain the Ultimate Reward. (Of course, that's skimming over a lot of details and other key plot points. But that's the gist of it.)

If you should get into it... if you have the time. Right now the comic is 5379 pages long, and there is a looooot of reading. But it makes fantastic use of the medium.

You really have to remember that for the first year or so, Hussie was using reader commands to write the story, which is kind of why you'll hear people complaining about the first couple acts (though personally, I found them funny).

(As for fantasy books, have you ever read The Circle of Magic books by Tamora Pierce? They're marketed for a younger audience, but they're really good. Her books in general are usually great.)

Aw man, seriously? I don't think I do have that kind of time rn what with exams three weeks away. Oh well, I guess I'll bookmark it for next year.

Touhou fan here. If you love music remixes, classical arranges, power rock music, and not be fazed by hundreds of YouTube links, then it could be the fandom for you.

A word about Homestuck: the first few acts are made with reader participation. Because of this, the storyline at the beginning is weird and doesn't make any sense. It picks up around Act 4, so get ready for some long reading.

FELLOW GABRIEL FAN

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-12 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
He is definitely the best character in Supernatural.

ALSO: I recently got into Homestuck, basically read far enough that I knew who the trolls are, and immediately fell headfirst into fandom.

Most people seem to care more about the trolls than the human kids, and I'll agree, they're more interesting (in my opinion), but it certainly does take a godawful long time to get to their introduction.

If you have issues keeping track of timelines and huge character lists, I would approach Homestuck with caution. (BUT IT IS SO AMAZING ONCE YOU GET INTO IT)

Why yes, yes he is. He had so much potential! How could they give us a tantalizing line implying Gabriel is a trickster god of Norse myth and just leave it like that?! There's so much to say - how did he end up bffs with Odin? Did he actually give birth to a horse? Did he have an affair with a giant? It's sad that fandom is so into Sam/Gabriel that this point doesn't get explored nearly enough.

Yeah I've heard from a lot of people that it takes a while to get to the best bits. But it does sound interesting, so hopefully I'll get the opportunity to give it a shot.

I'm not so much into Sam/Gabriel (I <3 me some Dean/Gabriel), so I also wonder about his history! Was there another Loki? Is he every trickster god? When did he "become" a pagan god? Was it before humanity even had gods? SO MANY QUESTIONS.

Oh my God, high five! I also love me some Dean/Gabriel <3 I'm actually just getting into it as a matter of fact. Do you have any fics you'd rec?

I also think the writers didn't exactly think the Gabriel-running-away plot very thoroughly. If he ran away when Michael and Lucifer were fighting, which would be pretty early in time, how did he help out Mary and Jesus? Is he secretly in contact with God? How does a character only in four episodes even leave behind so many questions?!

I don't have many recs because unfortunately the pairing is sooooo rare, but these are three of my favorites:

Tricky Like That: schmoopy schmoop with a side of schmoop. AU in that Gabriel is still called Gabriel, but the story takes place before either of the boys know about his angel-ness.

Poetic Justice: When Gabriel is killed, the world needs a new Trickster, and Dean is the perfect replacement. This one is good, especially the interaction between Dean and Gabriel.

This Gentle Chaos, This Quiet Madness: this one is beautiful, and really appeals to those who are interested in Gabriel's "Loki" persona. So hot. SO. HOT. UNF.

I pretty much ship anyone with Gabriel. He's too much fun not too =D

Gen fics are pretty well done with him, too. There needs to be more fandom love :(

Time for old blue

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-10-12 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I convinced Al28894 to look a while back... he doesn't seem to regret it so far.

Here's a video that, berefit of context, offers no spoilers!

It's early. The author gets better..and that doesn't mean this is bad!

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003049

The music is amazing throughout. It's a true webcomic. There's flash. THere's interactive games. There's music. Oh lord is there music (check out the soundtracks in the music tab even if you never read a page. You will find something you like, I guarantee it)

People largely summed it up, but here's the old reliable!

Be ready to put aside some time, or take advantage of the "save game" option! It will save your page as long as you have cookies enabled!

Everything that this guy says. Also, I never got the chance to properly thank you for encouraging me to read that comic. So, THANK YOU!

Sorry, coming in late, but if you haven't already you should give The Twelve Kingdoms series a try. It has an interesting world some fantastic character development.
