I kind of shrug and feel awkward with BBC Sherlock and Elementary, since the steampunk setting is what charmed me about Sherlock Holmes in the first place.

you mean in the RDJ version right? i liked that too. i probably like the bbc version more than other recent adaptations because i love all the morally ambiguous, sort of fucked-up interplay between all the characters. i am hft

Well yeah, the RDJ version and the original stories. I just couldn't get into BBC Sherlock or Elementary because it felt too current. I like getting sucked into a world different from my own, rather than one that mimics it. If I'm going to watch someone be brilliant at solving mysteries in our current time, I'd rather watch House instead.

People can like BBC Sherlock and Elementary though. I realize the steampunk element is my personal preference.

ACD Holmes isn't "steampunk" - it's contemporary with its time. Steampunk is not a synomyn for 'Victorian/Edwardian'.
