Sadly, I notice it most with the popular fics. I think probably the writers either don't want to disappoint their fans, or they like the feedback and don't want to give up their fans. Which one I decide depends on how jaded I feel on any given day.

Yeah. I'm stunned some fics for my fandom are still popular because of exactly that. I sometimes want to as their still-eager fans what exactly they like about them any more. But that would be kinda wanky.
