This is in a movie where Captain America's enemy has control of the same powerful object as his enemy in WWII did. It's all contrived.

No, that's not contrived, because it's not a coincidence: the tesseract was an Asgardian trinket that was one of the most powerful things on the planet Earth, which one of the most powerful men in Nazi Germany stole, and was then specifically targeted and sought out on earth by Loki because of its power.

You could say it's contrived that Steve woke up just in time to see that happen, though. But that's just general necessary-for-a-fictional-story contrivance, nowhere near "so, that waitress at the cafe you always go to is Peggy's niece!" Unless they retcon away the fact that Steve met her before because it was a deleted scene.
