No criticism!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I know what bugs people about this now. I've always been okay with artists and writers saying they don't want criticism because the "It's a hobby, I do it for fun" reason works for me. If you don't want to make it serious or if you don't particularly care about improving, that's perfectly fine with me.

However, it's not fine with me if you're an artist doing commissions. You can ask for no criticism and I ain't stoppin ya, but I am morally opposed to it. Because if you're getting money for it, it can still be your hobby but it's also a job of sorts. And honest opinions and criticism start to matter because it will help people decide if they want to commission you or not. Of course, said criticism doesn't necessarily have to be in the comments right below the work, but "Absolutely no criticism ever" is quite the indicator that you wouldn't want it anywhere else either. I definitely don't think the artist-I-have-in-mind's comment comes from a place of evil business tactics, but you know. It still doesn't sit right with me.
