He was not supposed to show any favors toward the Slytherins and he was supposed to be fair and square to the Gryffindors? He was a bloody Death Eater for fuck's sake! Name one Death Eater who didn't skeeve off the Gryffindors or smooch up to the Slytherins. One who isn't dead.

there's a difference between showing just favoritism and outright bullying students to the point of making them terrified of you. and you know Snape probably enjoyed it. the dude was a dick, no matter the noble things he did.

What was he supposed to do? Not bait Gryffindors when he already had a reputation of hating on them? Remember, his students were children of Death Eaters who wrote to their parents. Any wrong move, any perceived favour toward the Gryffindors would have been immediately reported to fellow Death Eaters by his own students.

I don't see how he could have been nicer and still be a Death Eater spy at the same time.

...again, there's a difference between baiting and CAUSING EMOTIONAL ANGUISH (jesus, look at Neville). And I kind of doubt his treatment of the students was entirely due to his death eater affiliation. He was a bitter man and probably would have been a dick regardless (and I say this as someone who likes him as a character).

If he wasn't a Death Eater, he could have had reasons to change. Because he needed to remain one, Dumbledore couldn't have threatened to fire him or told him to be a better teacher or made him do anything else public that went against his perceived behaviours. Maybe he would have remained a dick, maybe he would have lightened up. We'll never know because he was only ever a Death Eater and we saw everything through Harry's eyes.
